It was in fact used by farmers as breakfast, spreading it on slices of homemade bread and adding a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, on cold winter mornings before getting to work.
The preserve is prepared with fresh tomatoes, onions, chili peppers, basil, parsley, and olive oil, all brought to a simmer until the product thickens.
Also good as a pasta sauce.
